The 17th Annual Rocking Chair Nationals was held at Mason-Dixon Dragway located near Hagerstown, MD. Several northeast drag strips cancelled their racing programs because of the above normal June temperatures. Gold Dust Memories Nostalgia Motorsports Events opted to hold this race and car show since it couldn’t be rescheduled later during the 2024 season.

A commendable turnout of racers, fans, and show cars endured the 95 plus temperatures and high humidity.

The event began with an awards ceremony early Saturday morning. Legendary racers including Royce Miller and media personnel were presented plaques which stated “ for their contribution over the years to promote and enhance the sport of drag racing,”

After the awards ceremony the competition vehicles were given two time shots prior to the elimination rounds . Some of the race cars competed within their own group eg. MANDRA, Pro Stick, Outlaw Pontiacs, and Vintage Eliminator. The remaining race vehicles were organized in three eliminators: Super Pro, Pro, and Nostalgia Eliminator. Considering the weather conditions the racing was a spectator’s delight.

The awards presentation for the show cars was held earlier than scheduled due to the afternoon temperatures. Trophies and special awards were given to the deserving participants. Hopefully next year’s Rocking Chair Nationals will have average June temperatures and once again fill the show car field and the race car pits to capacity.
